From Classrooms to Continents: Year 1 and 2 Embark on a World Tourism Day Journey

The Cambridge section at GIIS KL transformed into a vibrant global hub as Year 1 and Year 2 students celebrated World Tourism Day 2025 through a series of engaging, interactive activities. Guided by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the event aimed to nurture curious, creative, and respectful global citizens across both grade levels.

Year 1: A Creative Trip Around the World

Organized by the Humanities Department on September 29, 2025, from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM, the Year 1 event engaged students in hands-on exploration centered on smart, safe, sustainable, and enjoyable travel. Dressed in colourful national attire representing various countries, the young learners embarked on an exciting journey across Asia.

Through teacher-led project demonstrations, students learned how to conduct research, structure their ideas, and present with confidence. Working individually and in groups, students, including Azora, Madhu Malar, Thea Tulasee, Rithik Dev, and Jovan, prepared Manila card displays, crafted tourist backpacks, and built impressive 3D models of iconic landmarks. Stepping into the role of tour guides, they shared fascinating insights into geography, local traditions, regional cuisine, and famous sights.

This initiative aligned with UN SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), alongside 9 Gems competencies, specifically Gem 4 (Personality Development), Gem 5 (Innovation and Creativity), and Gem 6 (Entrepreneurship & Leadership).

Year 2: A Journey of Discovery

Continuing the momentum, Year 2 Cambridge learners, under the guidance of class teacher Ms. Prasilia Selvanathan, stepped into the roles of young travellers and global researchers for "Tourism Around the World: A Journey of Discovery." Each child investigated an assigned country, exploring its location, capital city, landmark heritage, regional food, and culture.

Equipped with teacher-prepared play passports, boarding passes, and flags, students traveled from station to station within their classroom. They listened attentively to peer presentations, asked thoughtful questions, and collected stamps in their passports as they explored destinations across the globe.

To highlight this year's focus on technological transformation, students incorporated recycled materials into their 3D landmark models and integrated AI-supported digital presentation tools. The session supported SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), while strengthening 9 Gems values in Gem 4 (Personality Development), Gem 5 (Innovation and Creativity), and Gem 9 (Skill Development).

To conclude the celebration, the World Tourism Day Competition recognized outstanding student presentations:

First Place: Samrath Singh Thakral (USA)
Second Place: Sarthak Kundu (France)
Third Place: Viraat Mahavira Tadikala (Australia)

These primary events mark the opening chapters of an inspiring, multi-part schoolwide series for World Tourism Day. Upcoming editions will showcase Years 3–6 focusing on "Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism," as well as Years 7–10, who participated in the "Malaysia–India Cultural Exchange Programme" featuring cultural dance performances, interactive Cultural Connection Games, and the "Plant Your Destination" initiative.
